About me
In my spare time -- when I am not driving or Zooming to teach for multiple California community colleges -- I enjoy programming. And I enjoy meeting other teachers who code! Yes, here in my profile statement I am using the terms 'programming' and 'coding' interchangeably. But if you fancy splitting hairs about these sorts of ideas, then do come to my Friday 8:30 morning session! Or, if you are interested but are unable to attend the session, I would certainly be happy to invite you to a virtually shared drink over a video call, anytime.
Online teaching began for me during California's progressive response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to our big lift into distance education, I had been teaching in SoCal classrooms and language resource labs since 2005. Therefore, I was already well aware of the obstacles for learning and for teaching English as a Second Language in resource-limited community college and continuing education settings. Now we are all trying to answer the question of what ought to happen next to connect our elevated online environments with the institutions on the ground that we are still familiar with (and which we still need to invest in). This larger discussion is an exciting one to be a part of, even if it is also sometimes nerve-wracking! This context is relevant to our Friday 8:30 session certainly.
Last item -- still speaking of feeling excited, but without the relevance to work -- I have one further detail about myself to offer. It is this: I greatly enjoy role playing games from the 1990s, particularly the ones which encourage creative and critical thinking. GURPS 4th Edition anyone? Knowledge of Generic Universal Role Playing Systems will NOT be a pre-requisite for joining the Friday 8:30 morning session, just to be clear. ;-)
Enjoy the conference!
