About me
Sachiko Oates is an immigrant who learned English as a Foreign/Second Language. Sachiko earned a Doctorate in Education in Leadership and Innovation at Arizona State University and works as a technical assistance (TA) consultant in Adult Education and Workforce Development at American Institutes for Research (AIR). Prior to joining AIR, Sachiko taught English to Speakers of Other Languages for more than 20 years. She most recently served as the director of noncredit programs at Santa Barbara City College. As an administrator, Sachiko led the college’s noncredit programs to be nationally recognized for their distance learning practices. Sachiko also spearheaded several equity-focused initiatives at the college including increasing immigrant learners' access to career technical programs and developing grant/scholarship programs for adult education students. She is a proud mother of two bilingual children and two rescue dogs- a Husky/German shepherd and a Chihuahua/Dachshund.
