Understanding the Emotional Labor of English Language Teaching while Black in the US
Friday November 15, 2024 10:15am - 11:45am PST
Research examining emotional labor (EL) as it is experienced by English language teachers has not been sufficiently inclusive of Black English language teachers (BELTs). In this presentation, I discuss my experiences with EL as I struggled to manage feelings stemming from race-related stress to present feelings that are aligned with the emotional rules of an intensive English program. Additionally, I highlight some of the unique challenges experienced by BELTs. Finally, I argue that endured triggering of race-related stress in response to workplace microaggressions sends implicit oppressive messages for BELTs to either detach from their racial identity or leave TESOL.

AI-Driven ESL Curriculum: Comparing Traditional and AI-Enhanced Approaches
Friday November 15, 2024 3:30pm - 4:00pm PST
This qualitative study explores the application of artificial intelligence in English as a Second Language curriculum design with traditional approaches, focusing on impacts on diverse learners. Through classroom observations and teacher interviews in two ESL classrooms over four weeks, this study investigated how AI-powered curriculum tools influence language learning and learner engagement compared to traditional methods. The research examines practical implementation of AI-suggested lesson sequencing and content adaptation, discussing the balance between AI recommendations and teacher expertise. Findings provide insights into the real-world effects of AI integration in ESL programs, contributing to the ongoing discussion on technology-enhanced language learning.

Digital Activities for Lower Level Students: Empowering Voices with Slides
Saturday November 16, 2024 10:15am - 10:45am PST
Digital literacy is not usually considered an integral part of low level ESL instruction. Faced with the need for basic skills and vocabulary, technology may seem a secondary concern. However, presentation software can provide an effective means of engaging students, allowing them to manipulate text and images and express themselves more easily than many written tasks. This presentation will give research-based evidence for student-created slides in beginning ESL classes, recommendations for project implementation, and examples of successful projects with student samples. Finally, participants will outline and share their own ideas for slide projects adapted to their specific classrooms.
