The presenter will share tips, techniques, and lesson plans. One of the key components of success is building a class community where the students get to know, help, trust, and respect one another. Attendees will leave this session with an understanding of the process and a variety of techniques and activities they can use in their own beginner level classes.

Synthesis of Intertextuality-based Practices in Academic Reading and Writing
Friday November 15, 2024 3:30pm - 4:00pm PST
This project reviews forty scholarly works on intertextuality in academic reading and writing to investigate how language educators can help L2 learners improve their academic literacy through intertextuality-based practices. It identifies effective pedagogical practices and provides practical guidelines for educators to integrate intertextuality in the teaching and learning of academic reading and writing, enhancing L2 learners' academic literacy by bridging theoretical perspectives and practical applications.

Teacher Perceptions and Teacher Preparation Programs
Friday November 15, 2024 3:30pm - 4:00pm PST
This study investigates teacher preparation programs (TPP) and the perceptions held by teachers about their preparedness to teach and work with vulnerable populations such as students classified as English Learners or special needs, are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and come from multicultural communities. The research aims to answer three driving questions: (1) What are teacher perceptions about the effectiveness of their teacher preparation program? (2) How do teacher preparation programs prepare teachers to teach in multilingual and multicultural environments? (3) Is there a significant influence between teachers' perception of their preparation program and their perceived preparedness to teach multilingual and multicultural students?

Cultural Implications in Teaching Writing Remotely to Students in Afghanistan
Friday November 15, 2024 3:30pm - 4:00pm PST
In Spring 2024, presenters piloted an academic remote writing class for Afghan students to address challenges with AI-generated content.
Emphasizing student voices over form, the class faced cultural and situational hurdles, including limited internet access and Taliban rule.
In this session, participants will understand the context and develop strategies to address AI usage in a context where challenges include a lack of resources and gender apartheid. All class resources will be shared.

Exploring Processability Theory: Its Application in Chinese College EFL Classrooms
Saturday November 16, 2024 8:45am - 9:15am PST
Can Processability Theory (PT) predict and enhance the syntactic development of Chinese college EFL students? This session explores PT's applicability through targeted teaching interventions aiming to improve learners' syntactic developmental stages and provide practical insights for educators. Two experiments were conducted: an online pre-test to assess developmental stages and a task-based language teaching intervention. Results indicate significant improvements in syntactic development, demonstrating PT's potential to inform and improve EFL instructional practices.

A Revolution in Education: Translanguaging as a Path to Social Justice
Saturday November 16, 2024 9:30am - 10:00am PST
Although education is a key element in the support of human rights (Burke et al., 2023), immigrant students still face considerable disparities in educational achievement (Goriss-Hunter et al., 2023), with nearly one-third unable to complete high school due to a lack of English proficiency (NCES, 2022). This study investigated teachers' perceptions of translanguaging and its impact on bilingual students' academic success, revealing that teachers find English-only classrooms unethical and believe translanguaging provides fair educational opportunities by valuing students' identities. This presentation will help K-12 bilingual teachers support their students in L2 communication, L1 maintenance, and academic knowledge development through translanguaging.

Cal-GETC Credit for ESL Courses: Bridging the Equity Gap for Multilingual Students
Saturday November 16, 2024 9:30am - 10:00am PST
Many multilingual, community college students face delays in achieving their educational goals because few ESL courses are transferable or degree applicable. To address this inequity, California Community Colleges are increasingly seeking transferability for academic ESL courses. Aiming to foster dialogue and collective efforts toward equity for multilingual students, the speaker will outline the process of submitting courses for Cal-GETC (California Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) approval, including the steps, content standards, and the challenges involved. By the end of the session, participants will gain tools to pursue transferable and degree-applicable credits for ESL courses. Q&A will be included.

Tuning in, Talking More, and Taking Turns Empower Learners' Voices
Saturday November 16, 2024 9:30am - 10:00am PST
Language development happens faster in environments where learners hear lots of talk, including stories, conversations, descriptions, and advice. English learners can develop skills to help create such language-rich environments. When learners work to generate more talk, they create more opportunities to practice language skills at home, at work, or at school. Presenters describe classroom activities that develop adults' ability to tune in, talk more, and take turns in everyday conversation. Participants review pragmatic and interactive integrated skills activities for use in contexts such as vocational ESL, and teacher-training courses.

Nontraditional ESL Students and Information Competency : A Librarian's Call to Action
Saturday November 16, 2024 10:15am - 10:45am PST
What is information competency and how do librarians teach it? The current California community college library model of teaching information competency is based on traditional degree-seeking students and ignores the needs of nontraditional ESL students. To meet the learning needs of nontraditional ESL students, we need transformational and culturally responsive leaders who embrace the link between critical race theory and critical information literacies. This session will include a community college librarian's preliminary research on curricular change on their campuses. A good opportunity to network and exchange resources.
