With rapidly emerging technologies such as Large Language Models (LLMs) being used for daily life, naturally this has piqued interest in its implications for language learning. This study aims to explore student usage of Artificial Intelligence tools in an ESOL context to develop understanding of its viability both inside and outside of the classroom as a language learning partner. Activities were performed in three stages: in-class discussion, guided use of AI tools, and an optional follow-up survey. Results were found to be mixed, with a moderately positive response on learner attitudes towards AI tools indicating worthwhile exploration in ESOL courses.

This study used a written interview format to ask several large language models (LLMs, specifically, Claude, Chat GPT, and Gemini) about their ability to write reading passages restricted to particular vocabulary lists, and with specific restrictions on text complexity. The presentation outlines the background of the study, particularly features that might be included in passage specifications, and provides options for setting specifications in a particular context and/or at a particular level of English proficiency. It outlines the various capabilities claimed by current versions of the LLMs that were interviewed.
Identity labels can be confusing for international student writers, even at the university level of academic writing programs in the United States. This presentation highlights teacher and student experiences with a collaborative podcast writing project on identity labels. The multimodal writing project was designed to help students explore the intersections between identity and language via a critical language awareness lens. Hunter, Patillo, Robinson, and Taylor (2016) introduced the framework of Black placemaking referring to how 'urban Black Americans create sites of endurance, belonging, and resistance through social interaction' (p. 32), which Tichavakunda (2020) and Halkiyo and Hailu (2023) extrapolated to educational settings, and Murphy (2022) applied to global Blackness across the Americas through the concept of aquilombamento or 'the act of creating or meeting in a maroon community' (p. 236) for the life-giving purposes of relief, resistance, self-determination, and joy. This keynote presentation proposes as a site of Black placemaking the AfroMetaverse online platform where Black adolescents in Brazil and Colombia meet, chat, and collaborate with African American middle and high school students playing educational English, Portuguese, and Spanish language games incorporating augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences with the study of the history and cultures of Afrodescendants throughout the Americas. AfroMetaverse, which is modeled after the CONIX Research Center's Augmented Reality Edge Networking Architecture (ARENA) networking platform that combines AR and VR for multimodal interaction between local and remote users, positions Black students at the forefront of the latest technological advances in computer assisted language learning (CALL) while prioritizing a critical race pedagogy for world language teaching (CRPWLT, Anya, 2021). The presentation describes how the AfroMetaverse project demonstrates CRPWLT and responds to Austin and Anya's (2024) call for Black Linguistic Reparations to address the history of harm against Afrodescendants in language study by centering the experiences and success of Black students to inform curriculum, instruction, policy, and teacher training for racial justice in TESOL and multilingual education. The presentation also details the AfroMetaverse project timeline, collaborations with international partners in racial justice and global education, and prospects for empirical research to assess the impact of engaging in this site of Black placemaking.

Students highlight both opportunities and challenges, expressing concerns over privacy and autonomy while acknowledging AI's convenience. What is information competency and how do librarians teach it? The current California community college library model of teaching information competency is based on traditional degree-seeking students and ignores the needs of nontraditional ESL students. To meet the learning needs of nontraditional ESL students, we need transformational and culturally responsive leaders who embrace the link between critical race theory and critical information literacies. This session will include a community college librarian's preliminary research on curricular change on their campuses. A good opportunity to network and exchange resources.
Reading comprehension skills are essential for success in school and the workplace. Adjunct questions (AQ) have the potential to improve reading comprehension by directing the readers' attention to important information in a text. AQ can be integrated into digital environments where AI generates relevant prompts, analyzes responses, and adapts questions. Before integrating textual enhancements, design aspects and effects on comprehension need investigation. By reviewing eight L2 (second language) studies, this presentation offers recommendations for implementing AQ in both classroom and digital environments and provides examples of how to iterate the AI for prompt engineering.

Digital literacy is not usually considered an integral part of low level ESL instruction. Faced with the need for basic skills and vocabulary, technology may seem a secondary concern. However, presentation software can provide an effective means of engaging students, allowing them to manipulate text and images and express themselves more easily than many written tasks. This presentation will give research-based evidence for student-created slides in beginning ESL classes, recommendations for project implementation, and examples of successful projects with student samples. Finally, participants will outline and share their own ideas for slide projects adapted to their specific classrooms.

This genre of text is now commonplace when accessing information online. The presenters share a dynamic approach of leveraging AI for multimodal text creation to scaffold foreign language and/or heritage language writing instruction and overall proficiency development.
Generative AI is one of the most powerful technologies of communication that the world has yet seen, but one that is especially challenging to harness, especially in second language learning contexts. This presentation will discuss approaches to incorporate generative AI in second language classrooms that can successfully foster writing skills, language development, and critical AI literacy for academic and career success.

To address the results of a needs analysis, the podcast was designed to: 1) address the potential audience's interests, including the use of AI tools, teacher social-emotional well-being, etc., 2) be 20 minutes- long to maintain the audience's attention, 3) integrate visuals for maximum audience engagement, and 4) feature the voices classroom instructors.
