Vocabulary Learning According to Shrek, Words Have Layers!

John McWhorter, linguist of Black English, claims 'loving your language means a command of its vocabulary beyond the level of the everyday.' Many teachers send their students, armed with a vocabulary list, diving into the dictionary as a first contact. While that may offer a start, words are like onions (and ogres) and have layers, and command of vocabulary requires facility with the corresponding layers of each word. In this presentation, participants will explore layers of vocabulary words from denotations to collocations and discuss strategies for assisting students to develop a strong command of words.

The speaking skill in the second-language classroom is mostly ignored, difficult to assess, and the dialogues commonly employed in English as a foreign or second language (EFL/ESL) textbooks for exercising it are stubbornly grounded in the written form. Although it is common knowledge in the TESOL community that the affective factors of anxiety and self-esteem influence second-language acquisition and that our models for teaching speaking show that the role of authentic speech is fundamental for teaching the speaking skill, no work until now has shown instructors how to prepare students for creating authentic speech before entering into dialogues in action.

Understanding the Emotional Labor of English Language Teaching while Black in the US

Research examining emotional labor (EL) as it is experienced by English language teachers has not been sufficiently inclusive of Black English language teachers (BELTs). In this presentation, I discuss my experiences with EL as I struggled to manage feelings stemming from race-related stress to present feelings that are aligned with the emotional rules of an intensive English program. Additionally, I highlight some of the unique challenges experienced by BELTs. Finally, I argue that endured triggering of race-related stress in response to workplace microaggressions sends implicit oppressive messages for BELTs to either detach from their racial identity or leave TESOL.

This presentation introduces a method for utilizing the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements by transforming them into communicative group activities, providing educators with a practical way to integrate the frameworks in class. While proficiency checklists are helpful for L2 learners, interactive activities may offer a more effective means of utilization. Over an extended two-month period, these activities proved effective, as students minimized L1 use and engaged in extended speech despite increasing task difficulty. Interviews and questionnaires conducted at the end of the project indicated that students responded positively to the activities overall.

In a bilingual elementary classroom, effectively implementing scaffolding and translanguaging is essential for growing the students' linguistic repertoire while promoting bilingualism. This presentation demonstrates ways in which students can be encouraged to actively participate in a bilingual classroom setting. Scaffolding explains how the Zone of Proximal Development is associated with language acquisition, where it can be applied to a student's learning environment. Translanguaging discussion circles and oral and digital storytelling create safe spaces for students to share about themselves in ways they feel comfortable doing so, such as using their home language while continuing to grow their classroom target languages.

Korean Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions of Using Technology in Education

This study aims to examine the perceptions of Korean pre-service elementary school teachers about education using technology on the basis of their self-efficacy and the challenges they may face when during the class. For this, 120 participants completed a survey including twenty closed-ended questions and one open-ended question. It was found that overall, the participants seem to feel comfortable in using technology in classrooms while they are not confident to appropriately use computer terminology and to evaluate proper software for teaching and learning. Concerning challenges, teacher-related, students-related, and other types of difficulties including technical issues were explored.

Traditional writing assessment often focuses on a final product as compared to the developmental process that initially brought it to fruition (Hirvela,1999; Stern & Solomon, 2006). As a result, learners focus their attention on perfecting a final product rather than on the process of writing. Unsurprisingly, much instructor feedback addresses technical corrections while comments focused on quality and development of ideas, structure/organization, and cohesion are frequently deficient (Stern & Solomon, 2006). In this workshop, we offer social annotation as a more humanized learning and assessment process.

Irvine Valley College's ESL class, two levels below English composition, incorporates weekly reading assignments, written tasks, and presentations using Google Slides and AI-generated images. The curriculum is designed to be student-centered, promoting active reading, thorough understanding, and peer teaching. Implementation includes role assignments, collaborative presentations, and response blogs. By semester's end, students will read and reteach a novel, demonstrating improved language skills. Integrating emergent bilingual students into K-12 mainstream classrooms can lead to psychological pressures (Dovchin, 2021) due to the lack of linguistic support. This study explored K-12 educators' perspectives teaching at bilingual schools in the U.S. regarding the use of the translanguaging method, which is believed to support the educational and emotional health of students (Kleyn & García, 2019). According to results of a survey and interviews, teachers reported that translanguaging enhances positive emotion among students because it bolsters self-confidence and encourages classroom engagement. The presentation will provide insights into educational practices and propose topics for future research.

The AfroMetaverse as Black Placemaking for Racial Justice in TESOL

Hunter, Patillo, Robinson, and Taylor (2016) introduced the framework of Black placemaking referring to how 'urban Black Americans create sites of endurance, belonging, and resistance through social interaction' (p. 32), which Tichavakunda (2020) and Halkiyo and Hailu (2023) extrapolated to educational settings, and Murphy (2022) applied to global Blackness across the Americas through the concept of aquilombamento or 'the act of creating or meeting in a maroon community' (p. 236) for the life-giving purposes of relief, resistance, self-determination, and joy. This keynote presentation proposes as a site of Black placemaking the AfroMetaverse online platform where Black adolescents in Brazil and Colombia meet, chat, and collaborate with African American middle and high school students playing educational English, Portuguese, and Spanish language games incorporating augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences with the study of the history and cultures of Afrodescendants throughout the Americas. AfroMetaverse, which is modeled after the CONIX Research Center's Augmented Reality Edge Networking Architecture (ARENA) networking platform that combines AR and VR for multimodal interaction between local and remote users, positions Black students at the forefront of the latest technological advances in computer assisted language learning (CALL) while prioritizing a critical race pedagogy for world language teaching (CRPWLT, Anya, 2021). The presentation describes how the AfroMetaverse project demonstrates CRPWLT and responds to Austin and Anya's (2024) call for Black Linguistic Reparations to address the history of harm against Afrodescendants in language study by centering the experiences and success of Black students to inform curriculum, instruction, policy, and teacher training for racial justice in TESOL and multilingual education. The presentation also details the AfroMetaverse project timeline, collaborations with international partners in racial justice and global education, and prospects for empirical research to assess the impact of engaging in this site of Black placemaking.

Although education is a key element in the support of human rights (Burke et al., 2023), immigrant students still face considerable disparities in educational achievement (Goriss-Hunter et al., 2023), with nearly one-third unable to complete high school due to a lack of English proficiency (NCES, 2022). This study investigated teachers' perceptions of translanguaging and its impact on bilingual students' academic success, revealing that teachers find English-only classrooms unethical and believe translanguaging provides fair educational opportunities by valuing students' identities. This presentation will help K-12 bilingual teachers support their students in L2 communication, L1 maintenance, and academic knowledge development through translanguaging.

This presentation offers insights into workshops offered to Pakistani educational coaches working with refugees from Afghanistan as part of an English Language Specialist assignment in 2023 with the U.S. Department of State. In addition to examining the complexities of delivering virtual workshops in a synchronous, transnational space, the presenter will examine how liminality, uncertainty, and social presence offered opportunities for humanization and connection. The presenter will offer both theoretical and practical insights into virtual Communities of Practice, including specific tools and techniques used for sustained community-building and connection across four distinct geographic locations and a virtual space.

Adjunct questions (AQ) have the potential to improve reading comprehension by directing the readers' attention to important information in a text. AQ can be integrated into digital environments where AI generates relevant prompts, analyzes responses, and adapts questions. Before integrating textual enhancements, design aspects and effects on comprehension need investigation. By reviewing eight L2 (second language) studies, this presentation offers recommendations for implementing AQ in both classroom and digital environments and provides examples of how to iterate the AI for prompt engineering.

Across the United States, mainstream and ESL teachers have been enhancing their classrooms by adopting coteaching and collaboration strategies inspired by special education inclusion models (Nordmeyer, 2008; Wertheimer & Honigsfeld, 2000). In this workshop, we will explore how Southwestern College is championing teacher collaboration through an IET immersion model, showcased through authentic case vignettes. We will demonstrate how collaborative experiences and coteaching between content teachers and ELL professionals lead to significant improvements in student learning. By using successful cooperative planning and techniques, classroom content educators and ESL professionals are discovering effective ways to improve lesson delivery and differentiate instruction.

One primary objective of an ESL classroom is to ensure that students have effective communication skills, often by enhancing their vocabulary acquisition skills. Considering classroom games in the context of project-based learning, games can present tantalizing opportunities for enhancing vocabulary learning through increased interaction with the content and classmates. This workshop will outline and sequence cooperative gaming suggestions that have been utilized effectively in intermediate- and advanced-level integrated ESL courses and will include a basic analog vocabulary review game, participation in embedded communication activities, and examples of student-led modifications, followed by a brief discussion of participant takeaways.
