This practice-oriented session presents evidence-based pedagogical strategies to promote language development of adolescent multilingual students for academic writing. The strategies and activities are contextualized within close reading of a complex text and a source-based analytical writing and are tied to a cognitive strategies readers and writers access for meaning making.
In an increasingly globalized world, effective intercultural communication is essential. Graphic design tools are now readily available for everyone to learn and use. Empowering multilingual learners to learn design skills in order to communicate their messages across social media platforms is one way to create opportunities for intercultural communication. Come to this lightening talk to learn innovative approaches to elevate English instruction, encourage social media use for good, empower students with 21st century skills, and create opportunities for enhancing language learning, critical thinking skills, and global citizenship via technology-mediated social interactions.
Rubrics help students do better work and make grading easier for teachers and fairer for students. This session will start with some background about how to create rubrics, including benefits and cautions. Next, information will be presented about the free rubrics website, Rubistar, which offers more support for teachers. The transition from the EAP classroom to the college campus and external community can be difficult. Surviving and thriving requires more than just academic skills. In fact, social integration is often as challenging as academic issues. This presentation will discuss a number of these challenges. It will show how to go beyond classroom-based tasks by taking students into the community and/or bringing the community into the classroom. Through a series of activities and examples, teachers will learn ways to help students overcome the fear, anxiety, and isolation that can limit their success after EAP.

A picture is worth a thousand words, especially if those words are oral and aurally comprehensible! Phonemes enjoy sound-symbol correspondence in writing, a visual medium. In contrast, suprasegmental elements of spoken language including stress, intonation, rhythm, and connected speech are not codified in written form. They typically remain in an invisible sphere. Using a digital audio recording application software program, Audacity, a teacher of speech, pronunciation and listening can exploit the Spectrogram feature to enhance learners' understanding and perception of their spoken English and compare it to that of intelligible speaker models.

Assessments in TESOL are not just tools for assessing student progress but are integral to effective teaching and learning. This session explores practical strategies to create more effective assessments by incorporating the six principles of effective assessment: validity, reliability, authenticity, practicality, positive washback, and equity. The session covers aligning assessments with objectives, using clear rubrics, providing meaningful feedback, and making the assessment process more equitable. By the end, educators, assessment designers, and administrators will gain strategies to create goal-aligned assessments, illustrated with real-world examples and success stories. How can language teachers best facilitate this win-win situation: students improve their language skills and increase their knowledge of community issues, social justice strategies, and U.S. culture, while community-based organizations gain from the time and energy of student volunteers? Falling in love with a chatbot is the stuff of science fiction fantasy, right? Well, not quite. People feeling human attachment to computer chatbots dates back to at least the 1960's. Even more innocuous patterns like saying a computer is 'smart' are problematic, and such patterns are likely to increase as AI becomes more ubiquitous.
This presentation looks at history, psychology, and more to explain why distinguishing between AI and humans is a crucial, but not necessarily intuitive, part of AI literacy for our ESOL students. Attendees are invited to discuss, and also receive suggestions for their classrooms.
Research examining emotional labor (EL) as it is experienced by English language teachers has not been sufficiently inclusive of Black English language teachers (BELTs). In this presentation, I discuss my experiences with EL as I struggled to manage feelings stemming from race-related stress to present feelings that are aligned with the emotional rules of an intensive English program. Additionally, I highlight some of the unique challenges experienced by BELTs. Finally, I argue that endured triggering of race-related stress in response to workplace microaggressions sends implicit oppressive messages for BELTs to either detach from their racial identity or leave TESOL.

This poster examines labor trends from the past and present to explore how future labor demands in ESOL might shift with the increase of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Many praise how educators can save time with AI, but what's missing from this prediction? This poster explains the caveats entailed by such laudatory claims and how a field like education that's riddled with burnout won't be saved by AI hacks and shortcuts. Furthermore, those most impacted by labor shifts are marginalized already, and have the most to lose as work changes in uncontrollable ways. Come to discuss, raise awareness, and build hope.

Our current array of IGs includes CIRT, CSU, IC, LGBTQ+, RW, RC, MW, NNLEI, OT, TELL, TEW, TOP, and USC! In this alphabet soup of acronyms, find a group of like-minded educators to empower your voice. Present and past IG Chairs and coordinators will be there to chat and orient you to what each IG focuses on and which ones you should join.
This session explores engaging and empowering ESL students in academic writing through novels, group work, and digital tools. Irvine Valley College's ESL class, two levels below English composition, incorporates weekly reading assignments, written tasks, and presentations using Google Slides and AI-generated images. The curriculum is designed to be student-centered, promoting active reading, thorough understanding, and peer teaching. Implementation includes role assignments, collaborative presentations, and response blogs. By semester's end, students will read and reteach a novel, demonstrating improved language skills. This study used a written interview format to ask several large language models (LLMs, specifically, Claude, Chat GPT, and Gemini) about their ability to write reading passages restricted to particular vocabulary lists, and with specific restrictions on text complexity. The presentation outlines the background of the study, particularly features that might be included in passage specifications, and provides options for setting specifications in a particular context and/or at a particular level of English proficiency. It outlines the various capabilities claimed by current versions of the LLMs that were interviewed.
Gaming has become a mainstream entertaining activity worldwide, evolving into complex systems that combine virtual spaces and engaging environments across all digital platforms. This unique potential can be leveraged by Second Language Acquisition programs. In this presentation, we will explore into the multifaceted benefits of using games in SLA further.
Hunter, Patillo, Robinson, and Taylor (2016) introduced the framework of Black placemaking referring to how 'urban Black Americans create sites of endurance, belonging, and resistance through social interaction' (p. 32), which Tichavakunda (2020) and Halkiyo and Hailu (2023) extrapolated to educational settings, and Murphy (2022) applied to global Blackness across the Americas through the concept of aquilombamento or 'the act of creating or meeting in a maroon community' (p. 236) for the life-giving purposes of relief, resistance, self-determination, and joy. This keynote presentation proposes as a site of Black placemaking the AfroMetaverse online platform where Black adolescents in Brazil and Colombia meet, chat, and collaborate with African American middle and high school students playing educational English, Portuguese, and Spanish language games incorporating augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences with the study of the history and cultures of Afrodescendants throughout the Americas. AfroMetaverse, which is modeled after the CONIX Research Center's Augmented Reality Edge Networking Architecture (ARENA) networking platform that combines AR and VR for multimodal interaction between local and remote users, positions Black students at the forefront of the latest technological advances in computer assisted language learning (CALL) while prioritizing a critical race pedagogy for world language teaching (CRPWLT, Anya, 2021). The presentation describes how the AfroMetaverse project demonstrates CRPWLT and responds to Austin and Anya's (2024) call for Black Linguistic Reparations to address the history of harm against Afrodescendants in language study by centering the experiences and success of Black students to inform curriculum, instruction, policy, and teacher training for racial justice in TESOL and multilingual education. The presentation also details the AfroMetaverse project timeline, collaborations with international partners in racial justice and global education, and prospects for empirical research to assess the impact of engaging in this site of Black placemaking.

This presentation explores a survey conducted with instructors in our university's Intensive English Program, highlighting key findings regarding instructor values, job satisfaction, and areas for improvement. The results have led to substantial program changes and offer insights for enhancing instructor retention and program quality in similar educational settings.
Reading comprehension skills are essential for success in school and the workplace. Adjunct questions (AQ) have the potential to improve reading comprehension by directing the readers' attention to important information in a text. AQ can be integrated into digital environments where AI generates relevant prompts, analyzes responses, and adapts questions. Before integrating textual enhancements, design aspects and effects on comprehension need investigation. By reviewing eight L2 (second language) studies, this presentation offers recommendations for implementing AQ in both classroom and digital environments and provides examples of how to iterate the AI for prompt engineering.

Writing is one of the challenging issues in learning process for ESL students. We know our students belong to the technology era and are completely intertwined with their cellphones, iPads, or laptops. This poster session explores how, with the help of Google Docs, we can provide our students a new method of teaching in writing classes.
This poster session outlines the steps followed to create a podcast. To address the results of a needs analysis, the podcast was designed to: 1) address the potential audience's interests, including the use of AI tools, teacher social-emotional well-being, etc., 2) be 20 minutes- long to maintain the audience's attention, 3) integrate visuals for maximum audience engagement, and 4) feature the voices classroom instructors.
The poster session displays the various aspects of the podcast design process, provides a fail-proof set of ideas on how to design a podcast, and describes the role played by the classroom instructors in the podcast.

Positive Psychology is a branch of psychology which studies a person's well-being, focuses on a person's strengths and takes a proactive and holistic approach towards mental health. Incorporating tools from this field in the language learning classroom can help create a positive learning environment and boost a student's motivation and self-esteem. In this workshop, participants can discover activities and resources related to Positive Psychology which they can use in their own classrooms.
The K-12 level group will discuss topics impacting PreK-12 education, with a primary focus on career pathways both regionally and internationally. Teacher education is witnessing the residual effects and innovations as a result of COVID-19 and will discuss ways to address the academic and social-emotional needs of our multilingual students. How can we prepare educators to meet the changing needs of PreK-12 multilingual learners? What opportunities exist for current educators or those interested in entering the field? Students don't leave their culture at home, but rather, bring it with them into the classroom. Even if everyone speaks English, when students don't understand each other's culture, there can be culture clashes that result in breakdowns in communication. Once an individual has been insulted, it is difficult to undo. To effectively work with immigrants and refugees, teachers must be knowledgeable about cultural practices around the world. Participants in this workshop will play a game designed to expand awareness and to challenge their knowledge of Do's & Taboos, Food & Drink, Holidays & Festivals, Superstitions and more.
Engaging students to interact critically in contemporary problems and topics of civic engagement empowers their critical hope for the future and their own advocacy for a more equitable community. Building on Jeff Duncan-Andrade's theory of of critical hope, the presenter will share a framework and examples on combining civic engagement topics, critical thinking, information literacy, and academic vocabulary development in a pre-transfer-level reading-composition course and take participants through a journey of how to help students understand the nature of injustice, the reasons for engagement or bystanding, the architecture of activism, and the power of non-violent resistance.
