With rolling enrollment, unpredictable attendance and a vast disparity of prior academic success the instructor of a beginning-level English literacy class needs strategies. In the context of Adult Education, students are refugees, immigrants, college graduates, pre-literate in their first language, parents, employees, young and old. How can teachers meet the needs of such a diverse group? In an effort to be effective, equitable, and inclusive, teachers need varying strategies to address the variety of student needs. Join our workshop to discuss ways to individualize instruction in these multi-level classrooms without adding to the burden of planning and teaching.
This session explores engaging and empowering ESL students in academic writing through novels, group work, and digital tools. Irvine Valley College's ESL class, two levels below English composition, incorporates weekly reading assignments, written tasks, and presentations using Google Slides and AI-generated images. The curriculum is designed to be student-centered, promoting active reading, thorough understanding, and peer teaching. Implementation includes role assignments, collaborative presentations, and response blogs. By semester's end, students will read and reteach a novel, demonstrating improved language skills. This presentation will give the audience opportunities to see the innovative applications of three domains of authenticity, linguistic, cultural, and functional (Buendgens-Kosten, 2013) in ESOL. In addition, it will present the ideas of various activities applying the three domains of authenticity in various interesting contexts such as online materials, signs, and humor. The audience will be able to widen their view to incorporating authenticity in ESL/EFL classes, especially in connection with technology.
Can Processability Theory (PT) predict and enhance the syntactic development of Chinese college EFL students? This session explores PT's applicability through targeted teaching interventions aiming to improve learners' syntactic developmental stages and provide practical insights for educators. Two experiments were conducted: an online pre-test to assess developmental stages and a task-based language teaching intervention. Results indicate significant improvements in syntactic development, demonstrating PT's potential to inform and improve EFL instructional practices.

Join Ana Guzman, M.A., winner of the 2024 Ron Lee Technology Award, in a workshop that exposes new and experienced ELL teachers to Google Sites. Educators will learn research-based strategies that promote culturally relevant and inclusive practices and help build safe learning environments for Emergent Bilinguals and Newcomers. Students apply new skills by building a site where they demonstrate proficiency in the four language skills and confidence in using technology. This poster session introduces a specialized ESL program developed by the South County Crosscultural Council (SCCC) for members of the Laguna Day Worker Center (LDWC). Designed to provide Spanish-speaking day laborers with basic practical literacy, our program follows a flexible curriculum directly responsive to student needs. ESL lessons at the LDWC are prepared with the precarious nature of day labor work in mind, providing students with a uniquely collaborative and adaptable 'classroom' experience. By empowering members of this historically marginalized population to pursue English-language-learning in an accessible and supportive environment, our pedagogical model opens crucial pathways to continuing and higher education.
One primary objective of an ESL classroom is to ensure that students have effective communication skills, often by enhancing their vocabulary acquisition skills. Considering classroom games in the context of project-based learning, games can present tantalizing opportunities for enhancing vocabulary learning through increased interaction with the content and classmates. This workshop will outline and sequence cooperative gaming suggestions that have been utilized effectively in intermediate- and advanced-level integrated ESL courses and will include a basic analog vocabulary review game, participation in embedded communication activities, and examples of student-led modifications, followed by a brief discussion of participant takeaways.
