Authentic Communication to Empower Transitioning EL Writers

EL student writers come to believe writing (especially in the target language) to be demonstration of mechanics. As EL student writers shift from noncredit ESL (or secondary ELD) to college classes for credit, transitioning the purpose of writing from demonstration of language comprehension to authentic communication is often under-considered and disadvantages transitioning EL student writers. This lightning talk will review a writing task which focuses on this shift to a communicative writing focus via centering student experience (schema) and the civic value of this experience for the writing's audience, creating an opportunity to perform writing, and reflecting on the writing process.

Rubrics help students do better work and make grading easier for teachers and fairer for students. This session will start with some background about how to create rubrics, including benefits and cautions. Next, information will be presented about the free rubrics website, Rubistar, which offers more support for teachers. Finally, using and adapting rubrics from ChatGPT will be demonstrated, with pluses and minuses. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and comment throughout.

Promoting Pronunciation Development by Seeing What Speech Looks Like

A picture is worth a thousand words, especially if those words are oral and aurally comprehensible! Phonemes enjoy sound-symbol correspondence in writing, a visual medium. In contrast, suprasegmental elements of spoken language including stress, intonation, rhythm, and connected speech are not codified in written form. They typically remain in an invisible sphere. Using a digital audio recording application software program, Audacity, a teacher of speech, pronunciation and listening can exploit the Spectrogram feature to enhance learners' understanding and perception of their spoken English and compare it to that of intelligible speaker models.

The speaking skill in the second-language classroom is mostly ignored, difficult to assess, and the dialogues commonly employed in English as a foreign or second language (EFL/ESL) textbooks for exercising it are stubbornly grounded in the written form. Although it is common knowledge in the TESOL community that the affective factors of anxiety and self-esteem influence second-language acquisition and that our models for teaching speaking show that the role of authentic speech is fundamental for teaching the speaking skill, no work until now has shown instructors how to prepare students for creating authentic speech before entering into dialogues in action.

Adult learners in California have benefited in so many ways by participating in the EL Civics program. From civics lessons to workforce prep as part of Integrateed English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE), the EL Civics program has offered a flexible and culturally responsive framework to meet the needs of students as needs arise. Agencies have developed civic objectives and addtionally assessment plans (COAAPs) to address the great digital literacy divide exacerbated by the pandemic and an entrepreneurial COAAP to empower ESL learners to start their own businesses. This session will inform about cutting-edge ideas developed by your colleagues, how agencies might expand Integrated Education and Training (IET) beyond IELCE, and potential changes in funding.

The Padlet was designed for a noncredit ESL course at a community college. Students were taught to present on a travel-themed experience. This activity promotes active participation, enabling students to engage in meaningful online interactions while receiving scaffolded support.
