Drawing on speculative scenarios and narratives crafted by Ukrainian students, this presentation examines emerging visions for higher education in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Students highlight both opportunities and challenges, expressing concerns over privacy and autonomy while acknowledging AI's convenience. These narratives reveal a tension between efficiency and traditional educational values like critical thinking and creativity, and illustrate the changing roles of universities, teachers, and students. This method empowers students' voices, offering insights into their aspirations and informing educators how to adapt teaching practices. Attendees will gain practical strategies for integrating student narratives to enhance civic learning and educational outcomes.

How can you pronounce what you cannot hear? In this presentation, we'll examine how second language/accent speech sounds are acquired, compare it to first language learning. We'll discuss the role that listening, hearing, and perceiving play in producing, pronouncing sounds, words, and pitch contours in an additional language or accent. Participants will see and experience ways to promote listening discrimination activities that help learners improve their pronunciation of sounds and pitch contours.

Can Processability Theory (PT) predict and enhance the syntactic development of Chinese college EFL students? This session explores PT's applicability through targeted teaching interventions aiming to improve learners' syntactic developmental stages and provide practical insights for educators. Two experiments were conducted: an online pre-test to assess developmental stages and a task-based language teaching intervention. Results indicate significant improvements in syntactic development, demonstrating PT's potential to inform and improve EFL instructional practices.

Although education is a key element in the support of human rights (Burke et al., 2023), immigrant students still face considerable disparities in educational achievement (Goriss-Hunter et al., 2023), with nearly one-third unable to complete high school due to a lack of English proficiency (NCES, 2022). This study investigated teachers' perceptions of translanguaging and its impact on bilingual students' academic success, revealing that teachers find English-only classrooms unethical and believe translanguaging provides fair educational opportunities by valuing students' identities. This presentation will help K-12 bilingual teachers support their students in L2 communication, L1 maintenance, and academic knowledge development through translanguaging.

Teaching English to newcomers from oral cultures presents distinct challenges. In this session, we will examine oral-based cultures' learning techniques and strengths. We will define orality, explain differences in learning between oral and literate cultures, and demonstrate effective teaching methods for oral learners.

This presentation offers insights into workshops offered to Pakistani educational coaches working with refugees from Afghanistan as part of an English Language Specialist assignment in 2023 with the U.S. Department of State. In addition to examining the complexities of delivering virtual workshops in a synchronous, transnational space, the presenter will examine how liminality, uncertainty, and social presence offered opportunities for humanization and connection. The presenter will offer both theoretical and practical insights into virtual Communities of Practice, including specific tools and techniques used for sustained community-building and connection across four distinct geographic locations and a virtual space.

Translingual approaches to service-learning in first year writing courses have the potential to leverage institutional community engagement frameworks in ways that empower the voices of students and community partners and decenter language hierarchies in the classroom and community. This presentation will focus on a Writing Partners @ Sac State course design that aligns with the CSU's Community-Engaged Learning Initiative, centers students' diverse writing practices, and facilitates meaningful collaboration between college and K-12 students. Attendees will have the opportunity to consider how a translingual approach to service-learning might inform community-engaged work at their institutions.

What is information competency and how do librarians teach it? The current California community college library model of teaching information competency is based on traditional degree-seeking students and ignores the needs of nontraditional ESL students. To meet the learning needs of nontraditional ESL students, we need transformational and culturally responsive leaders who embrace the link between critical race theory and critical information literacies. This session will include a community college librarian's preliminary research on curricular change on their campuses. A good opportunity to network and exchange resources.

Reading comprehension skills are essential for success in school and the workplace. Adjunct questions (AQ) have the potential to improve reading comprehension by directing the readers' attention to important information in a text. AQ can be integrated into digital environments where AI generates relevant prompts, analyzes responses, and adapts questions. Before integrating textual enhancements, design aspects and effects on comprehension need investigation. By reviewing eight L2 (second language) studies, this presentation offers recommendations for implementing AQ in both classroom and digital environments and provides examples of how to iterate the AI for prompt engineering.

Developing students' proficiency with key academic vocabulary along with corresponding patterns and collocations is essential for success in academic writing. A co-author of the new third edition of the Word Combination Card demonstrates how to teach students to use high-frequency academic vocabulary, collocations, and patterns correctly and confidently. Covered areas include topic sentences, cause-effect, comparison-contrast, exemplification, reporting information, expressing quantity, and more. Materials will be provided.
