With rolling enrollment, unpredictable attendance and a vast disparity of prior academic success the instructor of a beginning-level English literacy class needs strategies. In the context of Adult Education, students are refugees, immigrants, college graduates, pre-literate in their first language, parents, employees, young and old. How can teachers meet the needs of such a diverse group? In an effort to be effective, equitable, and inclusive, teachers need varying strategies to address the variety of student needs. Join our workshop to discuss ways to individualize instruction in these multi-level classrooms without adding to the burden of planning and teaching.
This session explores engaging and empowering ESL students in academic writing through novels, group work, and digital tools. Irvine Valley College's ESL class, two levels below English composition, incorporates weekly reading assignments, written tasks, and presentations using Google Slides and AI-generated images. The curriculum is designed to be student-centered, promoting active reading, thorough understanding, and peer teaching. Implementation includes role assignments, collaborative presentations, and response blogs. By semester's end, students will read and reteach a novel, demonstrating improved language skills. Continuous refinement and potential rubric introduction aim to enhance grading consistency. Online supplements and student presentation links will be shared.

In addition, it will present the ideas of various activities applying the three domains of authenticity in various interesting contexts such as online materials, signs, and humor.
