Civics education in the United States focuses on people’s political participation in a democratic society and is crucial for helping multilingual learners (MLs) develop civic competence in their new community (Cruz & Thornton, 2009). A language-based approach to content instruction (LACI; de Oliveira, 2023) can help teachers better support their students in learning civics (Gui & de Oliveira, 2024). With examples from civics lessons from the Civics for All curriculum (New York City Public Schools, 2023), this featured session presents LACI as an approach to support civics learning for MLs.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational settings is transforming the landscape of learning and teaching. This presentation, AI-Enhanced Learning: Innovations, Ethics, and the Future of Education, explores the emerging role of AI in enhancing student engagement, personalizing learning pathways, and supporting educators in diverse instructional settings. With innovations ranging from intelligent tutoring systems to adaptive learning platforms, AI offers unprecedented opportunities for tailored educational experiences that address the unique needs of learners.
 
However, as AI becomes more deeply embedded in educational practices, ethical considerations demand attention. Issues related to data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the transparency of AI decision-making processes challenge educators and administrators to weigh the benefits of AI-enhanced learning against potential risks. This presentation delves into these ethical dimensions, examining how educators can responsibly navigate the integration of AI while prioritizing student welfare and equity.
 
Finally, we will discuss the future of education in a world increasingly shaped by AI, offering insights into the skills and knowledge learners will need to thrive in an AI-driven society. Through this exploration, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the transformative potential of AI in education, along with practical considerations for implementing ethical AI practices that support a just and inclusive learning environment.

This session dives into the advocacy and policy engagement of TESOL, supporting efforts across communities and countries in support of the English language teaching profession and the learners we serve. Included in the session are key elements for advocacy efforts at all levels.

In this interactive companion workshop to our panel, explore the professional possibilities for your own ESL career path.  In small and whole-group discussions, attendees will identify their own strengths and professional growth opportunities and start an action plan for their professional development, networking resources, and connecting with mentors.

Unfortunately, Justin Shewell, Incoming TESOL President, has to postpone his talk last minute due to -- laryngitis!  Dr. Shewell will be sharing the inspiring stories from TESOLers in early January, and CATESOL will post the recording for all attendees.

We all have a favorite teacher—someone who changed our lives through their words, their care, or their belief in us. The true impact of TESOL professionals goes far beyond language learning. TESOL professionals build cultural bridges, empower their learners to succeed, and prepare them for life-long growth. Through the stories of teachers both near and far, Dr. Justin Shewell will explore the field of TESOL and the power of communities of practice in teachers’ and students' lives.

 In this talk, Dr. Antero Garcia explores contemporary contexts for supporting diverse classrooms for justice-centered learning. Building on examples ranging from youth literacy practices on public school buses to ethical storytelling activities with immigrant communities, this talk offers examples for educators and the necessary questions that must guide our field in ever tenuous times. With research spanning from across the U.S., the topics in this talk will focus on the needs of learners of all ages and educators in both K-12 and higher education contexts. Finally, this talk will conclude with opportunities for group participation and q&a.

Join us for the CATESOL Chapters Virtual Networking Event! This year, the CATESOL Chapters (Bay Area, San Diego, Orange County, Saroyan, San Gabriel Valley, and Capital Area Chapters) have organized both virtual and in-person events, fostering connections within chapters and across the state.
This networking event will feature Chapter representatives sharing their past events and future plans. It will be followed by interactive breakout rooms dedicated to specific chapters, where you can ask questions, engage in discussions, and network with fellow educators.
